The TV ignores the remote, or only responds from very close up. On a Samsung set specifically, here is what that usually means.
Samsung IR receivers fail more often than the remotes do. Check the remote with a phone camera first — if it flashes, bring us the TV, not the remote.

Check this before you call
Point your phone camera at the remote's LED and press a button. If you see a purple flash on the camera, the remote is fine and the TV's receiver is the fault.
